Dynamic Haptic Geometry in Elementary & Undergraduate Classrooms

Project Overview
Background & Purpose: 

Our research study is integrated with our development plan to answer three core questions focused on assessing the perceived benefits of combining Sketchpad with haptic technology in terms of enhanced learning experiences (new curriculum) and learning outcomes as measured by content tests and case-study analyses of students’ reasoning:

  1. What types of new or enhanced learning experiences can be effectively integrated into elementary and undergraduate classrooms using the proposed technology
  2. What are the perceived benefits of haptic technology in addition to visual technologies and how can we investigate and evaluate these benefits?
  3. How can the technology and associated activities be integrated?

This research takes place in the local elementary school, local Boys & Girls Club and undergraduate classrooms at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Research Design: 

The research design for this project is cross-sectional and it’s designed to generate evidence that is descriptive [case study, design research, observational], and associative/correlational [quasi-experimental].

This project collects original data using assessments of learning/achievement tests, observations [personal observation, videography], and survey research [semi-structured/informal interviews]. Other instruments of data collection include an analytical framework that effectively differentiates how students interact and react to activities within the environment.

An analytical framework to accurately differentiate how students interact/react to working within the environment in terms of perception and dialogic interaction will be developed. Such a framework is developed through video observations and qualitative methods through a collaborative nVivo project. We will also use standardized measures of content knowledge before and after our brief interventions in formal school settings in the later years of our project.
