What Mathematics Do Students Know? Implications from NAEP for Curriculum and Policy

Project Overview
Background & Purpose: 

This project involves secondary analysis of secure data from the Main and Long-Term-Trend (LTT) mathematics assessments of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Specifically, the project will investigate the issues of (a) current knowledge and change over time on specific mathematics skills, (b) the extent to which the performance is related to specific mathematics curricula, and (c) the connection between courses taken in high school and mathematics performance. Results of the study will point to aspects of the curriculum that impact performance and will identify mathematics concept and skill clusters where student knowledge is underdeveloped

Setting: 

This research takes place in elementary, middle, and secondary education settings.

Research Design: 

This project is cross-sectional and is designed to generate evidence that is descriptive [Achievement and Background Survey Results] and associative/correlational [Comparison of Achievement and Other Characteristics]. This project uses data from the Main and Long-Term-Trend (LTT) mathematics assessments of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) as well as NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) and NAEP High School Transcript Study (HSTS) data.

Initial project work will focus on student performance on clusters of NAEP items that measure the same topic, type of reasoning, or ability. IRT scaling and equating methods will be used to quantify changes in performance over time and will be supplemented with HLM and other analyses that take advantage of CCD data. These data allow connection of NAEP results with mathematics textbooks used in schools that are included the NAEP sample. Likewise, HSTS data will be used to determine how course taking in high school relates to achievement.
