Project Overview

Background & Purpose:

The National Academies proposes to staff and administer the activities of the USNC-MI. The national commission will undertake a variety of projects that advance its core mission, which is to facilitate U.S. participation in the activities of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) and to engage the U.S. community in advancing mathematics education in the United States and throughout the world. Its primary goals are to establish strong U.S. interactions with the ICMI; foster communications within the U.S. community about ICMI and other international events; and support efforts to build strong international collaborations in areas of interest to U.S. mathematics educators. Thus the USNC-MI:

disseminates information in the United States about mathematical sciences education in this and in other countries;
considers and stimulates research studies and reports on comparative mathematics education;
fosters outreach programs to other countries and provides information about U.S. mathematical sciences education;
encourages regional and national meetings addressing international issues;
announces international meetings and congresses dealing with mathematics education; and,
participates in ICMI by nominating U.S. representatives to ICMI Studies, sending a delegation to represent the U.S. mathematics education community at the International Congress on Mathematical Education, and nominating individuals for election to union leadership.

Setting:

Held in Newport Beach, California, on July 31–August 2, 2009, one workshop brought together about 40 mathematics educators, mathematicians, education researchers, and other mathematics education specialists from the two countries. There were participants from three regions of China - Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu Province (north of Shanghai), as well as several Chinese scholars who now work in the United States. These experts on mathematics education discussed professional development methods and techniques commonly used in their countries.

Findings:

The workshop summary report features invited presentations and discussions that focus on the teacher development process used in the U.S. and China, and how the professional lives of teachers are structured to receive ongoing professional development.
