New Trends in Gender and Mathematics Performance: Meta-Analytic Synthesis

Project Overview
Background & Purpose: 

One goal is to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis of research on gender differences in mathematics performance. We also examine major national and cross-national data sets and test the Greater Male Variability Hypothesis.

Research Design: 

This is a synthesis project, using mixed-model meta-analysis to analyze the following datasets: TIMSS, PISA, NLSY, NELS88, LSAY, and NAEP, as well as studies identified through searches of databases such as PsycINFO.

Findings: 

In a 2008 Science article, we reported findings that girls have reached parity with boys in mathematics performance, for grades 2 through 11, based on the testing of more than 7 million youth in NCLB assessments.
