EAGER: SAVI: Dynamic Digital Text: An Innovation in STEM Education

Principal Investigator:
Project Overview
Background & Purpose:

The purpose of this interdisciplinary research project is to develop a novel design and architecture for dynamic digital textbooks for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and to test the system with content for two domains (science and computing), for two levels (middle school and college), and in two languages (Finnish and English).

Setting:

USA (Alabama, Virginia, Wisconsin)
Finland (Helsinki, Tempere, Turku)

Research Design:

The project uses a comparative research design and will generate evidence that is descriptive [design research] and associative/correlational [quasi-experimental]. An intervention consisting of eTextbook and associated curricula is being compared with other versions of the eTextbook and curricula. Investigators are collecting original data using diaries, assessments of learning, observation [personal observation, videography, Web logs], and survey research [online]. Instruments or measures being used include pre- and post-tests of science and programming knowledge, log data, observations, student generated artifacts, and videos. Analysis plans are being finalized but will involve coding rubrics, identifying patterns in log data and qualitative analyses of videos.

Findings:

Findings will be posted as they become available.

Other Products:

eTextbook design and theory.
